Results of the IMO Video Meteor Network - February 2009 ======================================================= Such a clear North-South gradient with respect to the observing conditions as in the last month is exceptional. In northern Europe, the conditions were catastrophic - not even one observer north of the Alps managed to get more than 50 observing hours. In Slovenia, the situation became slightly better, and observers in Italy and Portugal enjoyed almost permanent clear skies after February 10. According to this statistics, America lies also south of the Alps. ;-) In total, we collected an acceptable 1,700 hours of effective observing time and 3,600 meteors altogether. Also with respect to meteor shower activity, February is a poor month. The IMO meteor shower working list knows just one northern shower, namely the delta Leonids. It was not detected in the automated meteor shower search, though. A closer inspection of the radiants at individual solar longitudes reveals, that the delta Leonids seem to be at least partly active. Also the velocity of 23 km/s matches approximately. Beside this shower, only the Antihelion source is reasonably active. It has, however, no clearly defined radiant, but only a diffuse radiation area. So it comes as no surprise, that the meteor shower analysis reveals a number of individual Antihelion radiants. Also for February, the 2008 video meteor database analysis yielded a number of meteor shower candidates, which are unknown to the IMO shower list. The candidate with least scatter is a possible weak shower from February 2 to 7 (solar longitude 313-318 degree), based on just 66 showers members. On February 4, the average radiant lies at alpha=162°, delta=-14° (figure 1). The mean meteor shower velocity is 45 km/s. It seems that this shower has not been detected in the optical domain so far. However, the catalog from the Advanced Meteor Orbit Radar (AMOR) lists the alpha Antiliids (AAN) shower with quite similar characteristics (alpha=162°, delta=-13°, vinf=43 km/s) on February 2. The shower was also found by the Canadian Meteor Orbit Radar (CMOR). According their latest analysis, it is active between solar longitude 308 and 321 degree. On February 4 the shower lies at alpha=162°, delta=-12° (reference position in figure 1). Also the meteor shower velocity (44 km/s) matches well to the video data. Thus, the existence of the alpha Antiliids is now also proved in the optical domain. Figure 1: Radiant position of the alpha Antiliids in the constellation crater. The reference position was taken from the CMOR data. The naming of the shower is somewhat surprising, since alpha Antlia lies about 20 degree south. According the Peter Brown, the original radiant position must have been significantly in error or the name was choosen by mistake. In order to prevent further confusion, the original name was still kept up to now. The activity profile (figure 2) shows, that the ZHR will hardly exceed one in the full activity interval.
