Results of the IMO Video Meteor Network - July 2007 =================================================== July presented strong differences with respect to the weather between northern and southern Europe: England suffered from strong rainfalls and one of the worst floodings ever. In Germany, the weather was mediocre, and southern Europe suffered from extremely hot and dry weather. So it is no wonder, that Stephen Evans is still waiting for better weather, whereas all of our Slovenian and Italian observers collected well above 20 observing nights. Clear winner was the new Mintron camera ORION1 of Javor Kac with over 800 meteors. Even if I could not support the hypothesis quantitatively yet, this result is another indication for aging of Mintron cameras. It seems that the Sony ExView chip looses sensitivity after a few month of observation - maybe due to deterrioration of the microlenses in front of the CCD pixels? The overall number of recorded meteors increased significantly in July thanks to the improving sporadic activity and several minor showers (Capricornids, Aquariids, Perseids). The MetRec radiant plot showed repeatedly the Perseid radiant and in the last night of July also clearly the radiant of the SDA. Examples are the plots of HERMINE and MINCAM1. With such complete observing series it is worthwhile to analyse the long-term activity of individual meteor showers. For the analysis I utilized data of seven Mintron cameras (HERMINE, BMH1, METKA, ORION1, MINCAM1, REMO1, MIN38 - the data of SRAKA were not yet available at analysis time) with similar characteristics (no image intensifier, Computar lenses with f/0.8) and that collected at least 19 observing nights each. An overall of almost three thousand meteors (266 CAP, 210 SDA, 358 PER, 2120 SPO) recorded between July 4/5 and July 31/August 1 contributed to the analysis. That gives an average of 75 Sporadics per night, with individual values between 16 and 153 (displayed in the background of the graph). The meteor shower parameters (activity interval and radiant position) were taken from the current IMO Working List of Meteor Showers. The shower and sporadic meteors were summed up over all cameras for each night, and the ratio between the number of shower and sporadic meteors was taken as an activity measure for the shower. The alpha-Capricornids, whose activity starts "officially" on July 3 according to the IMO shower list, stayed unnoticable in the first half of the month. Only after July 20 they became obvious, but the activity profile showed no clear maximum. That agrees with the profile presented at the 2006 IMC, which shows a plateau of almost constant CAP activity between mid-July and early August. The southern delta-Aquariids, which "officially" begin on July 11, showed significant activity starting on July 24 with peak rates at the end of the month. This is once more in good agreement with the 2006 analysis, which revealed increasing SDA activity from July 25 onwards reaching a maximum at the end of July. The Perseids were already noticable at their "official" start on July 16 with an upward activity trend all month. The automatic meteor shower analysis of 2006 gave a start date of July 14, but maybe the the Perseids can be tracked even before that date? 1.
