Results of the IMO Video Meteor Network - January 2007

The new year started less successfully than the last year ended. The weather
was poor at most sites. Our observers in the Italian lows were affected most
badly, as they almost did not see any star at all. The situation was not much
better in England and western Germany. The observers in the Alps region still
had the best observing chances, unless their computers went on strike and
wasted a full month worth of observations as in Mihaelas case. The number of
observing nights of these observers deceives, though, as there were still
only a few nights with fully clear skies. Also the Quadrantid nights made no
exceptions, such that the overall result of nearly 2800 meteors is still
acceptable.
The breakdown of the number of meteor records in mid-January is always amazing.
You get the subjective impression, that meteor rates go down by over 50%
almost from one day to the next. This effect cannot be shown in the plain data, but
our long-term statistics show at least that the average meteor count reduces from
6 per hour in October till December to 2.5 in January till March.
Hence, the quiet part of the year has started again.
Meteor observations in this part of the year are especially valuable, as the
overall number of meteors available in our database is still limited for
these nights. So only the weather has to become more cooperative...
