Results of the IMO Video Meteor Network - August 2006

Whereas July was a summer month par exellence, central European weather changed
completely in August. It was cold and rainy almost all month, and the Perseid
maximum could be recorded at only a few sites. There were again four observers
who managed to obtain more than 20 observing nights in August, but most of
these were only partially clear. The total effective observing time went down
by about a third compared to July, and fewer meteors were recorded despite the
Perseids. Once more it was only thanks to the increased number of observers
(the data of Mihaela Triglav are not yet included) that the figures were
comparable to the August results of the last three years.
One highlight of the month was a bright fireball recorded by Mincam1 in
Seysdorf at August 15, 20:07 UT. The same fireball was recorded by several
Czech fisheye cameras of the European Fireball Network (but not by the German
EN all-sky cameras). Pavel Spurny of Ondrejov Observatory was so kind to not
only compute a trajectory and an orbit of the slow-moving fireball, but he also
analysed the accuracy of the video record (based on a Mintron camera with a 6mm
f/0.8 lens). Currently, the results are finalized, so they will be presented
next month.
At the IMC in Roden / the Netherlands in mid-September I presented results
from a first full analysis of the IMO video meteor database, which tiggered
vivid interest. It could be demonstrated clearly, how valuable our video
observations are and which potentials the database has. As announced before,
the slides with details about the detected meteor showers are available at

Furthermore I could congratulate the lucky observer of the 200,000st meteor
of the video meteor database at the IMC. The "jubilee meteor" was a first mag
sporadic, recorded on July 22, 21:41:59 UT. The bottle of Freixenet went to ...

prize), the two active video observers of the network present at the IMC
