Results of the IMO Video Meteor Network - June 2006

In June, central European weather finally switched from winter to summer.
The first teams that arrived in Germany for the soccer world championship
still complained about the cool temperatures early June, but just a few days
before the championship a period of summer weather started that continues even
until today. On many days the temperatures rose above 30 deg centrigrade and if
the
sky was clouded it was often only due to summer thunderstorms. The Championship
slogan could have been "The world visiting the Sun" instead of "The world
visiting friends".
As in the previous months, we did not miss a single night, such that we got
a 100% night coverage in the first half of 2006. More than 600 hours of
observing time and 1800 meteors does not seem much compared to other months -
for a June with its short nights, however, it's the best result we ever
obtained. Two observers with 26 and 27 nights, respectively, are another sign
for the great weather. The total amount of meteor records in the video archive
rose to almost 196,000 such that in late July or early August we will record
the 200,000th shooting star of the network. I'll try to find out who will be
the lucky observer, and present to him a bottle of champagne at the IMC (given
that he takes part).
Whereas a few regular observers needed to suspend observation, two new cameras
could be welcome in June. Wolfgang Hinz started to operate AKM2 north of the
Alps in Brannenburg, and Sirko Molau tested a new Mintron camera. REMO1 stands
for REmote Meteor Observatory. The goal is to operate this camera starting
from August without assistance from a site in northern Germany to improve the
coverage of the network.
Last month I reported on the Tau-Herculid activity at the May/June boundary.
The now available data from early June confirm the conclusion, that this
meteor shower caused by comet 73P/Schwassmann-Wachmann was virtually non
existent.
