Results of the IMO Video Meteor Network - June 2005

June started unsteady but evolved to a midsummer month. Even though two
observers managed to obtain 23 observing nights again, it almost became the
first month of 2005 with less than a thousand meteor records. The reason were
neither the short and bright nights nor the low rate, but cirrus clouds and
remains of the cumuli that developed at daytime. They reduced the limiting
magnitude sometimes significantly.
The long-term statistics of the camera network show, that the hourly
meteor rate is increasing in June. In 2005, it declined from January
to March, but has been increasing steadily since then (Jan: 2.9, Feb: 2.3,
Mar: 1.9, Apr: 2.1, May: 2.7, Jun: 2.9). However, it is only in mid-July
that this effect becomes remarkable to the observer. The nights are getting
longer, the southern showers (Aquarid complex, Capricornids) become active and
the meteor number doubles within a few days only - comparable to mid-January,
when the hourly number decreased similar rapidly.
