Results of the IMO Video Meteor Network - May 2005

The reduction of night time hours towards the summer becomes most prominent
in May. By the end of the month, Finland experiences white nights and Ilkka
Yrjola has to suspend observation until the Perseids. At the geographic
latitude of Berlin, the usable night time reduces from six to three and a half
hours in the course of the month. In Munich, there are five observing
hours by the end of May, and our Slovenian observers have still 30 minutes
more. It becomes more intuitive if you remember that the position of the
Sun early May is comparable to the Perseid time - only that is usually colder
than in August.
Compared to April, the effective observing time has reduced somewhat as
expected. With 14 participating cameras and good weather (two observers
reported 24 and 23 observing nights, respectively), May was again more fruitful
than in previous years. In fact, by the end of May we had recorded a few
meteors more than in the record year 2003. As the first few months of the
year are typically underrepresented in the video archive, the overall database
has improved significantly last month. With an overall of 5919 records, May
is still the month with least meteors, though.
Let's hope that the year continuous that positively.
