Results of the IMO Video Meteor Network - January 2005 ====================================================== January pleased the observers with an outstanding number of observing nights. In the first half of the month, weather was governed by a stable high pressure system, which was contrary to the previous month not connected to fog and low stratus. It presented a lot of sunshine as well as clear and frosty nights to the observers. For example, more than 100 hours of effective observing time could be collected on January 15/16 alone. In the second half of the month the weather became more unsteady and brought the long-awaited snow to most places - even in southern Europe, were snow is a rarity. The observing conditions deterriorated, whereby the south still had better conditions than the north. In the end, a number of observers managed to obtain more than 15 observing nights. With almost a thousand observing hours, January ranked third after August/September 2003 in the overall network statistics. Thanks to the good weather, the number of recorded meteors also increased slightly compared to the previous month. In this respect, it was by far the most successful January of the network. However, we will have to reduce our expectations for the months to come. Statistics of the last few years show, that the number of meteors remains constantly low between January and June. Improving weather conditions in spring time usually compensate for shorter nights at a constantly low meteor activity level. 1.
