Results of the IMO Video Meteor Network - September 2004

The first half of September was a dream for each meteor observer: Until well
over the middle of the month, there was plenty of Sunshine, Indian summer
temperatures at daytime and clear skies at night. Only a few cirrus clouds
disturbed the observations sometimes. Just with the beginning of autumn the
weather in Central Europe changed dramatically. From now on, it was cold and
rainy. Observations were restricted to a few cloud gaps, and the observational
statistics looks like a sparsely occupied matrix...
After the new AVIS2 camera was operated with a 35 mm f/2.0 lens during the
Perseids, I now use a 50 mm standard lens f/1.4 in normal operation to ensure
that the Moon never crosses the field of view. Whereas the first moonlit
September nights were still "normal", the camera later took my breath away
for a second time. With now 60 deg field of view and a limiting magnitude
beyond 6 mag, I regularly recorded between 150 and 200 meteors per night
in the absence of any major shower! Each night AVIS2 recorded as many
Aurigids and Piscids as a Mintron camera overall in the same night. By the
end of the month the camera had recorded the same order of magnitude of
meteors as all other cameras together - almost like Rob McNaught in Australia
at that time.
