Results of the IMO Video Meteor Network - June 2004 =================================================== The Juni Bootids were the highlight of the previous month. This minor shower experienced an unexpected outburst in 1998 with a maximum ZHR of 100, but was almost not noticable in the following years. Based on numerical models, enhanced rates were predicted for 2004, namely in the intervall 10 to 19 UT on June 23. In the night of June 22/23, three central European observers had part or full time clear skies, and in the following night two observers. A first inspection of the data yielded clear activity of the June Bootids on June 22/23, but almost no more Bootids in the following night: Observing Time (UT) t_eff Camera Obs. # Meteors ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 06/22 20:19 - 06/23 02:11 5.9h MINCAM1 MOLSI 2 JBO 7 SPO 06/22 21:04 - 06/23 01:45 5.7h KAYAK1 SLAST 4 JBO 14 SPO 06/22 21:39 - 06/23 01:51 4.2h AKM1 MOLSI 3 JBO 14 SPO 06/23 00:15 - 06/23 01:15 1.0h MINCAM2 STRJO 2 JBO 1 SPO 06/23 20:37 - 06/24 02:11 5.6h MINCAM1 MOLSI 1 JBO 14 SPO 06/23 21:27 - 06/24 01:51 4.4h AKM1 MOLSI 1 JBO 20 SPO 06/23 21:47 - 06/23 22:45 1.0h KAYAK1 SLAST 0 JBO 3 SPO ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Hence, maximum activity occured on June 22/23. Remarkable is the fact, that the Bootids were not evenly distributed in time, but that there was enhanced activity between 23:50 and 00:30 UT. Seven of the overall eleven June Bootids were recorded in that short time interval: Observing Time (UT) # Meteors ---------------------------------------------- 06/22 20:30 - 06/22 21:00 0 JBO 3 SPO 06/22 21:00 - 06/22 21:30 0 JBO 2 SPO 06/22 21:30 - 06/22 22:00 0 JBO 2 SPO 06/22 22:00 - 06/22 22:30 1 JBO 2 SPO 06/22 22:30 - 06/22 23:00 0 JBO 3 SPO 06/22 23:00 - 06/22 23:30 1 JBO 4 SPO 06/22 23:30 - 06/23 00:00 2 JBO 8 SPO 06/23 00:00 - 06/23 00:30 6 JBO 2 SPO 06/23 00:30 - 06/23 01:00 0 JBO 2 SPO 06/23 01:00 - 06/23 01:30 1 JBO 8 SPO ---------------------------------------------- A first IMO analysis of visual observations showed increased rates starting in the evening of June 22, whereas the maximum was reached at mid-day of June 23 with ZHRs up to 50. A peak at the above mentioned time was (not yet) confirmed. Anyway, both observations are another excellent proof of the power of dust trail modelling. Otherwise, June was a dull month. Due to the mediocre weather and short nights, the effective observing time decreased to a low of little above 300 hours. On the other hand, meteor activity slightly increased in comparison to May, such that the overall meteor count improved somewhat. It's a god sign for the end of the annual "dry period" for meteor observers. 1.
