Results of the IMO Video Meteor Network - April 2004

The Lyrids are the first noticable meteor shower of the year after the Quadrantids
in early January. This year we experienced favourable astronomical (no moon)
and atmospherical (cooperative weather) conditions, which allowed for the
observation of the Lyrid maximum at many sites. Thanks to this, the rates on April
21 were significantly higher than in other nights with clear skies.
Apart from that, April was the first month of the year in which we could cover
all nights again. Thanks to opposite streams in the high atmosphere, cold air was
transported via western Europe down to the Mediterranian Sea, whereas on the
back side warm air drifted over eastern Europe up the Scandinavia. For this
reason, Ilkka Yrjola was able to obtain an amazing 26 observing nights in
Finland - much more than ever before in April - wereas most other observers
got "only" slightly above ten nights. Only Joerg Strunk obtained another 21
nights.
Looking at the current 2004 statistics, we have three observers (MOLSI, STRJO
and YRJIL) with 61 observings nights. So it might become interesting to see who
will have most nights by the end of the year.
