Results of the AKM Video Meteor Network - January 2004

Will we have an unusually bad year after 2003, which was unusually good?
After January it looks like this, because it has been a long time that we
got so few data as in the last month. Hardly anyone could observe a full
night long. In the end we missed only two nights, because the few clouds
gaps of each observer were distributed quite well over the month, but not
a single observer got ten or more observing nigths (that happened in
January 2000 for the last time) and the number of recorded meteors was well
below thousand. So few meteors were last recorded in July 2000 (by six
observers at that time). On average, there were less than two meteors detected
each hour. Especially the non-intensified cameras often recorded nothing for
several hours. Because of poor weather in Australia, Steve Quirk had to pause
a second month.
In addition there were a number of technical problems reported. The image
intensifier of my camera AVIS ceased operation several times for a few hours.
It probably almost reached the end of it's lifetime after about 4.000 hours
effective observing time. The tube of TIMES4 becomes more and more noisy and
hardly shows stars anymore, and the video signal of AKM1 was disturbed from
time to time.
Hopefully the coming months will be more successful again.
