Results of the AKM Video Meteor Network - February 2003 ======================================================= Strange: In January I predicted that the number of "Australian meteors" will increase in the months to come, but I was wrong. Whereas the Australian summer was unusually cloudy, there was exceptionally good weather in central Europe in the second half of Febuary. Three observers reported more nights than Steve Quirk in Australia! In the Bavarian village of Seysdorf I could observe in every night from February 16 to 28. There would have been two more in addition to the 17 observing nights this month if I had not spend a weekend out of town. Other German observers also enjoyed many cloudfree nights, but they sufferend from occasional fog. The increase of meteor numbers from the middle to the end of February by about a factor of two is well visible in the data set of AVIS. The reason is the waning moon, which disturbed the observation less and less towards the end of the month. In total, 11 observers reported more than 800 hours of observing time in Februry 2003, which ranks among the five best months in the history of the AKM network. We finished the fourth year of network operation which started in March 1999. Almost 2000 meteors could be recorded, which is a huge number relative to the low meteor activity at this time of year. Together with the data from previous years it should now be possible to draw an accurate picture from ecliptical activity at the beginning of the year. In Finland, Ilkka Yrjola also obtained more than 10 observing nights, but the observers in England and on the Canaries were less successful. That does not change the good overall picture of February 2003, though. 1.
