Results of the AKM Video Meteor Network - November 2002

So that was the "big final" of the Leonids: Large observing expeditions were
organized again, and for a last time effective zenithal hourly rates of
several thousand and Leonid counts of up to 20 or 30 per minute could be
witnessed. However, there were fewer lucky observers who enjoyed clear
skies. Whereas the weather was quite cooperative in the last few years, many
observers faced problems in 2002: Most of central Europe experienced the
worst case and was fully clouded out. You could escape only to the north
(Denmark), south east (Hungary) or south west (Provence/France). For those
German observers who had to stay at home the distances were too large to
escape the clouds in the last minute by car.
The typical travel destinations of 1999 also faced problems. A cloud bank
swapped over Tenerife just at the maximum hour, whereas it was clear before
and thereafter. Observations in southern Spain were hampered by cirrus clouds,
which were especially disturbing in the presence of the bright moon. Most of
the video observations from these sites are still to be analysed, but it is
already clear that we cold collect much fewer data than in the previous years.
As for the rest of the month, there were a few clear nights in the first part
of November, but the second half was a complete miss for many European
observing sites. In Australia there were also many cloudy nights. So I guess
November will loose it special role soon and pass the title "most favourite
month of the meteor observer" back to August.
