Results of the AKM Video Meteor Network - December 2001

Poor weather forced the European observers to have a break in the first part
of December. That was not too bad, however, because they could use the time
to do first analyses of the enormous Leonid data collected a month earlier.
Just in time for the Geminid maximum, which occured under perfect circumstances
in 2001 (maximum activity in the morning hours of December 14 and new
moon), skies cleared at almost all observing sites. Already the next night
the good weather was over. Murphy must have really fallen asleep!
In the night December 13/14 an overall of 12 cameras were active for more than
100 hours, which amounts to about 30% of the overall observing time this
month. With 1386 meteors they recorded two third of all December meteors,
because also in the second part of December clear skies were the exception.
Even over Christmas, when many observers stayed at home and could have
obtained long observing series, the weather was very poor.
Rob McNaught was not active in December down under, but Steve Quirk reported
another impressive series with 18 observing night. Even without an image
intensifier and the Geminid maximum he recorded more meteors than most
Europeans!
