Results of the AKM Video Meteor Network - July 2001 =================================================== Eleven video systems in operation - that's more than ever in the history of the AKM video meteor network. July started promising for the German observers. At the beginning of the month there was a stable high pressure system that presented us a number of clear nights. The end of the month saw an increase in meteor activity and many cameras were in operation, whereas in the middle of July we had poor weather for two weeks. After the image intensifier of his own camera ADAM broke down early last year, Ulrich Sperberg had to quit video meteor observations for a while. Now he operates AKM1 at his observing site in Salzwedel, one of the two new AKM cameras. The other camera was operated by me in parallel to my own camera AVIS from Aachen. It recorded about 400 meteors - that's alone more than five observers contributed in all of July 2000! Starting from August AKM2 will be operated by Juergen Rendtel. Among the German observers he collects most observing hours. However, since the intensifier tube of his camera CARMEN has become quite weak, he recorded fewer meteors that other observers in the past. Whereas nights are getting shorter now for Rob McNaught, it's the start of high season for the European observers. Meteor activity increased mainly thanks to the early Perseid activity as well as the Aquarid and Capricornid radiant complex. Contrary to the European sites, these showers culminate almost at the zenith down under. For this reason Rob recorded in one night for the first time more shower meteors (SDA) than sporadics. In summary the video meteor database has improved largely thanks to July 2001, as in the last two years only a few meteors could be secured at that time of year due to bad skies. 1.
